Some promises in Scripture are conditional, and James 4:8 is one of the simplest. It has two halves, and the second half depends on the first.
A Promise With Movement
Notice how personal it is. Nothing is said about a ritual, a location, or a certain amount of time. It simply says to draw nigh, which means to come close. And God promises that He will do the same. Whatever distance you feel, you are not facing a God who stays far off until you earn your way in.
Jesus told a story that shows the same heart. When the lost son was still a long way off, the father “saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20) The son had barely started walking home when the father was already running.
Clean Hands, Undivided Hearts
James does not stop at the promise. The next sentence reads, “Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” To draw near to God honestly means bringing the real picture of ourselves: what we have done, and where our hearts are divided between Him and other things.
That may sound heavy, but it is the opposite. The cleansing is something He provides when we come honestly. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) Drawing near is not about performing well. It is about coming just as we are.
Closer Today
Drawing nigh does not have to be dramatic. It can be five quiet minutes with an open Bible, a prayer in the car, a confession you have been putting off, or simply stopping and saying, “Lord, I am here.” Small movements toward Him are met with His nearness.
Something to carry today: Take one step toward God today, however small, and expect Him to meet you. Be honest about whatever has been pulling your heart in two directions.
Father, I draw near to You today. Cleanse my hands and make my heart single toward You. Thank You that You do not wait at a distance but come close to everyone who comes to You. Be near to me, and let me know that You are. In Jesus' name, Amen.
