Some invitations are given to the strong and some to the qualified. This one is given to the tired.
Come Unto Me
Jesus does not say, “Come when you have it together.” He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden.” The two words He chooses are worth noticing. To labour is to be worn out by effort. To be heavy laden is to be carrying something you cannot put down. He speaks to both, and He makes a promise before He makes any demand: “I will give you rest.”
A Yoke Is Not a Weight
Then He says something that seems odd at first: take my yoke upon you. A yoke is a piece of wood that joins two animals so they can pull together. Jesus is not handing you a second load. He is inviting you into a team, with Him beside you and carrying the larger share.
The yoke has a lesson with it: “learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.” We learn rest from Him by watching how He lived. He was never hurried or anxious, and He never carried what the Father had not given Him to carry. Much of our weariness comes from picking up burdens that were never ours.
Light Does Not Mean Empty
He does not say life will have no burden. He says, “my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” His way still asks something of us. But it is fitted to us by Someone who knows what we can bear and who goes with us under it. David said the same thing long before: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.” (Psalm 55:22)
Something to carry today: Name the thing you have been carrying alone, then put it in His hands in prayer. Ask what in your day is truly yours to carry, and what you have picked up that you were never asked to.
Lord Jesus, I am tired, and I come to You as You invited. Take what I cannot carry. Teach me Your gentleness and Your pace, and help me walk beside You instead of ahead of You. Give rest to my soul today. In Your name, Amen.
