Paul wrote these words in chains. He was in prison, probably in Rome, with no freedom and no guarantee of release. Yet he was writing to a church he had never visited, in a small town called Colossae.

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Christ Is Enough

A friend named Epaphras had brought Paul news. The believers there were strong in faith and love, but false teachers were creeping in. They said Christ was not enough. You needed rules, rituals, special visions, and extra spiritual steps to be truly complete.

Paul's answer was simple: Christ is enough. Chapters 1 and 2 declare that He is supreme over everything. Then, in chapter 3, Paul turns to how that truth changes the way we live.

Live From It, Not Toward It

Notice the order. Paul does not say, “Try harder to be good.” He says, “If ye then be risen with Christ.” Your new life comes first, and the new behavior follows from it. You do not work toward being raised. You live from it.

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

Your life is hidden with Christ in God. That means it is safe, and it means your worth was never settled by what people can see. Because of that, Paul tells them to put off anger, lies, and bitterness, and to put on compassion, kindness, humility, and forgiveness. He even speaks to ordinary life: marriage, parenting, and daily work. And he ends the chapter with this: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (v. 23)

A prisoner told a struggling church that real freedom is not found in a system of rules or in your circumstances. It is found in who you belong to.

Setting your affection on things above does not mean ignoring the world around you. It means choosing what rules your heart: where you look first in the morning, what you give your attention to, and what you treat as most real.

Something to carry today: Ask yourself what you are adding to Christ, thinking you need more to be enough. Then stop striving and start living from the new life He already gave you, and do your ordinary work today as to the Lord.

Lord, thank You that in Christ I am already raised and already complete. Help me set my heart on things above, put off what belongs to the old me, and walk in kindness, forgiveness, and love. Let everything I do today, big or small, be done heartily for You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
