Jeremiah was young when God called him, and he knew it. The first thing he says in response is a list of reasons why God picked the wrong person. Before he got to say much, God spoke a sentence that was meant to settle the matter.

“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

Known Before You Did Anything

Look at the order of things. God knew Jeremiah before he was formed, long before he had a résumé, a reputation, or a single success to his name. Everything we usually point to as the reason we deserve God's attention comes later in the story. In this verse, God's knowing of him comes first, and it is not based on anything he has done.

That is worth carrying into the days when you feel like you have to prove yourself to be loved. Your worth to God was settled before your first breath. You cannot earn it by being impressive, and you cannot lose it by being ordinary.

Set Apart, Not Self-Made

The word sanctified means set apart. God is not saying Jeremiah qualified himself and was then chosen. He is saying God did the setting apart. So when Jeremiah says he is just a child and cannot speak, he is arguing against something God has already decided. His job was not to become adequate. It was to believe the One who had already called him.

Many of us treat our calling as something we have to deserve first: more training, more confidence, a cleaner past. Jeremiah's story says the call comes from God, and the equipping follows it. Right after this verse, God touches his mouth and puts His words there. The qualification arrives with the assignment, not before it.

What This Does to Your Excuses

It is easy to read this verse and think it only belongs to prophets. But the heart of it is true of every person God made: He knew you, He formed you on purpose, and He has a purpose for you that your excuses do not cancel. You may not be called to the nations. You may be called to a household, a workplace, a hospital room, a neighborhood. It is still a calling, and it still began with God.

Something to carry today: The thing you keep saying you are too young, too late, too broken, or too ordinary for may be exactly the thing God knew about you before you were formed. Stop arguing with His decision and ask Him for the words and the strength to take the next step.

Father, thank You that You knew me before I was formed. Forgive me for the excuses I have used to avoid what You have called me to. I do not have to be impressive; I only have to trust You. Put Your words in my mouth and Your strength in my hands, and lead me into what You set me apart for. In Jesus' name, Amen.
