Some verses are meant to be studied. This one is meant to be spoken over you. In Numbers 6, God gives Moses a blessing for Aaron and his sons to pronounce over Israel, and the way He words it shows what He wants His people to hear.
Blessed and Kept
The blessing opens with two things that belong together: blessing and keeping. It is possible to receive good things and then lose them, or to be protected without ever feeling provided for. God joins both. He does not just give; He guards what He gives. Many of us pray for the blessing and forget to ask for the keeping, yet the second is what lets the first last.
The Face That Shines
The next line is among the most tender in the Bible: the LORD make His face shine upon you. A face that shines is a face that is glad to see you. Think about the difference between walking into a room where someone looks up and smiles, and walking into one where nobody turns around. This blessing says God is not looking at you with a clenched jaw, waiting for you to improve. His face is turned toward you, and it is bright.
That matters most in the seasons when you feel like a disappointment. The blessing does not say He will be gracious to you once you have sorted yourself out. It says He will be gracious, and He will lift up His countenance upon you, which means He looks straight at you rather than away.
Peace, and His Name on You
The blessing ends with peace, a word that carries the sense of wholeness, of nothing missing and nothing broken. Then comes the verse that is easy to skip.
God says His name is being placed on His people, and that He Himself will do the blessing. The priests speak the words, but the source is Him. You are not a stranger at the edge of His attention. You are someone He has put His own name on.
Something to carry today: Say this blessing out loud over yourself today, and over someone you love. You are blessed, you are kept, His face is shining on you, and His peace is yours.
Father, thank You for words that are bigger than my fears. Bless me and keep me. Let Your face shine on me when I feel like I have let You down, be gracious to me, and give me Your peace. Put Your name on my home, my family, and my day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
